How to Make a Video

Video content is extremely important when it comes to digital marketing in 2020. From explaining a new product, taking customer questions, or just connecting with your base and saying hello, video marketing is a must if you are trying to grow your business.

In this article I will take you through some simple steps on how to create a professional looking and sounding video. This article is targeted at people who have someone that can do the editing for them (ie. a marketing team), but regardless there are some beneficial tips here for anyone that wants to make videos to help promote their business or brand.

First let’s take a look at some stats that will show you how important it is to start making those videos and get your face and brand out to the world.

  • 97% of marketers claim that videos help customers understand products. (HubSpot)
  • Over 80% of all traffic will consist of video by 2021. (Cisco)
  • 81% of businesses are now using video for marketing. (HubSpot)
  • 90% of consumers claim a video will help them make a purchasing decision. (Social Media Today)

Now that you can see how important video is to marketing your business, let’s check out some steps you can take to make the most out of recording your own videos for all of your social media platforms.

Step 1: Set up your phone or computer on a stable table.

It’s important to make sure your phone or computer is set up on a table or desk that is stable. No one likes a video that’s wobbly and out of focus. You can purchase a tri-pod for your phone, or just prop it up with some books.

Step 2: Make sure your background is intentional.

You are the focal point of the video so let’s keep it that way. Having backgrounds with computer screens, or tv’s that are turned on, messy kitchens or kids running around can be very distracting to the point you’re trying to get across. Have a solid wall, or some plants in the background. Something that’s visually appealing but not distracting.

Step 3: Quiet your environment.

This one is very important, especially if you’re recording on a phone or computer. The microphones in a phone or computer typically aren’t very good. So making sure that all background noise is kept to a minimum is very important to the quality of the sound. Turn off tv’s. Make sure your furnace or A/C isn’t running, make sure your housemates aren’t in the middle of a conference call, and put your dog in another room.

Step 4: Talk clearly and slowly.

Like I said before, the microphones aren’t great on phones and computers, so make sure you are talking in a loud clear voice. And talk a little slower than you usually do so the audience is sure to comprehend all the important information you are giving.

Step 5: Have a script in front of you next to your phone or computer.

This isn’t mandatory, but it can be very helpful. If it’s directly in front of you, you can read it and still look in the direction of the camera. If you need help writing a script, just let us know. We have some really talented writers on staff.

Step 6: Press record and try not to worry about getting it right on the first try.

If you make a mistake it’s OK. Just start the sentence, or the whole script over again. We will edit the mistakes out later. Record your video as many times as you want. The more you record, the more comfortable you will get.

All that’s left to do now is edit the video. And your video editing person will thank you for following all of the above steps. Your audience will too!
